Palm Springs Art Museum is getting ready for a new season with a growing list of exciting changes. If you enjoy art, or even if you just love to get out and do things around the Valley and check out what’s new, then you’ll want to keep up with what’s going on with the Palm Spring Valley’s premiere Museum.
NEW ADDITION IN DOWNTOWN PALM SPRINGS
The latest change at the Palm Springs Art Museum is the opening of The Architecture and Design Center located in the hub of downtown Palm Springs. The classic Midcentury Modern International Style building that houses the Center is in itself a work of historical art, having recently received Historic Site designation. Modernism is trending now, especially in Palm Springs, where it’s popular Modernism Week held twice a year in the spring and fall attracts participants from all over the world. Not surprising, since Palm Springs has the world’s greatest concentration per capita of Midcentury Modern architecture.
If architecture and history interests you, you owe it to yourself to drive around some of the older neighborhoods in Palm Springs such as Vista Las Palmas to see some of the amazing homes which are examples of Midcentury Modernism. I haven’t had the chance to visit the new Center yet, but it’s exciting to know that the Palm Springs Art Museum continues to put the city on the map with it’s commitment towards providing a place to house exhibits, research space, archives, design collections and educational programs which seek to preserve Desert Modernism for generations to come.
PALM DESERT GETS IT’S OWN SATELLITE MUSEUM
In 2012, the Palm Springs Art Museum’s main facility opened up a satellite extension in Palm Desert. This smaller museum venue provides an exciting opportunity to view temporary and permanent exhibits of contemporary visual art. These works are created by artists who are recognized on an international level and include a variety of media. It’s fun, it’s not as large as the main museum, so don’t worry about getting tired out or overstimulated when you visit. The space is intimate and for most people, it excites the senses and inspires their creativity. You don’t have to be an artist to enjoy the experience of viewing it.
My favorite part of the Palm Desert satellite is on the outside of the building. There you will find a beautifully designed desert garden with winding paths, water features and amazing sculptural works strategically placed in just the right positions. There are benches there for you to sit and meditate… and there are even yoga classes held on the grounds during season. Gift yourself with a visit to this garden, it’s a treat you won’t want to miss… and it doesn’t cost a thing!
