This weekend, one of the most famous music festivals in the country begins, right here in our very own Indio! The Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, an annual two-weekend, three-day music and arts festival featuring indie, rock, hip hop and electronic music, begins this Friday, April 11. The world-famous event takes place at the Empire Polo Club, a favorite venue of those who own Indio real estate. Founded in 1999 by Paul Tollett, the festival features the gamut of music genres, in addition to many art installations and sculptures throughout the grounds.
Coachella originated at a 1993 Pearl Jam concert that took place at the Empire Polo Club, as the band was boycotting Ticketmaster-controlled venues. The show validated the venue as a place where a large festival could be held, and several years later, the first Coachella event was held over two days. The annual show began in 2001, starting as a single-day event and reverting to two days in 2002. It expanded to three days in 2007 and to a second weekend in 2012. The show grows each year, attracting wide-ranging, world class talent and attendees from all across the globe. Past performances include Prince, Snoop Dogg, Any Winehouse, Dr. Dre, Paul McCartney, Wu-Tang Clan, The Killers, Madonna, Kanye West, Jay-Z, Arcade Fire, Beck, The White Stripes, Beastie Boys, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Foo Fighters, Rage Against the Machine, Radiohead and Daft Punk, among many other notable artists.
Presented by Goldenvoice, the all-ages festival features several stages hosting continuous live music. The stages include the Coachella Stage, Outdoor Theatre, Gobi Tent, the Sahara Tent, Mojave Tent and the Yuma stage that was introduced in 2013. Attendees number deep into six figures, with 225,000 people attending each weekend in 2010.
