Equestrian Round up for Polo & HITS

Polo season is about to kick in in the Coachella Valley

Polo season is about to kick in in the Coachella Valley

It’s time for our Equestrian roundup for both Polo and HITS enthusiasts.  Let’s start with Polo Happenings:

At the San Diego Polo Club, the summer season is winding down.  The final tournament, The Spreckles Cup, will be played on Sunday September 27 at 2 pm.  Public is welcome!  As we head up the coast to the beautiful and historic Santa Barbara Polo and Racquet Club, the Polo tournaments are still being played, though the season there is winding down as well.  The High Goal Tournament season saw the Finals of the Pacific Coast Open on Sunday, August 30.  That weekend was followed by the 20 Goal Maserati Silver Cup.

This past Sunday saw the the Jewelry by Gauthier Womens’ Polo Tournament, and next Sunday, 10/4 will be the USPA Presidents’ Cup Finals.  After the season tournaments wrap up, the Polo School, Lesson program and Arena Tournaments will begin through the winter months.

Here in the Coachella Valley, both the Empire and Eldorado Polo Clubs are preparing for another huge season of competitions.  Empire will be hosting some December 4-goal and 1-goal tournaments, and their VIP Tents are SOLD OUT for the 2016 season already!!  Eldorado Polo Club offices are just re-opening with Deb Morrison as games manager, James A’court as Social Events Manager, and Graham Bray as Club General Manager.  Polo Season officially opens here in the Valley first weekend of January, 2016.

Equestrian Activities in the Palm Springs Valley

A romantic evening on a Full Moon Trail Ride in Morongo Valley

Equestrian activities in the Palm Springs Valley are plentiful, so if you happen to be a horse person, rest assured there is no lack of exciting things to experience here in the desert. Whether it’s watching world class horse events held in the east valley – Indio, Coachella, Thermal area… or trail riding in the Palm Springs, High Desert area, your options are many.

SADDLE UP FOR A TRAIL RIDE

Trail riding is such a wonderful way to get intimate with the desert landscape.  It’s meditative. You’re surrounded by nature as you wind your way on horseback through the ruggedly beautiful canyons of the local mountains with the sun on your back.  Palm Springs is fortunate to be home to historic Smoke Tree Stables, tucked away off of the busy thoroughfare of Highway 111.  There you will find group packages available for trail riding adventures into nearby Indian Canyons, where the Cahuilla Indians used to roam and native palm oases and streams grace the landscape.  Picnic lunches or western cookouts can be included, whatever your fancy.

You can also hightail it up to the High Desert area of Morongo Valley for trail riding… it’s just a short 20 minute drive up Hwy. 62 from Palm Springs.  The High Desert offers it’s own brand of magic, as it’s typically at least 10 degrees cooler up there (which is nice in the summer) and the scenic views of snow-capped Mount San Jacinto and Mount San Gorgonio absolutely take your breath away.  You’ll think you’re in the Swiss Alps.

HITS champions, Laura Wasilenkoff & Jewels

Laura Forsythe Wasilenkoff; Circuit Champ!

Laura Forsythe Wasilenkoff; Circuit Champ!

The HITS horseshow is over.  It actually ended with their Final Championship Classes and Million Dollar Jump off 2 weeks ago.  Today is the FINAL day of Polo competition at both of our local and Internationally renowned Polo Clubs.  Eldorado Polo Club off of Madison in Indio, and Empire Polo Club, off of Monroe.

One of my good friends, Laura Forsythe-Wasilenkoff, and her home grown youngster, Jewels, captured the Long Stirrup Equitation Grand Circuit Championship!  What a thrill for Laura and her Jewels.  Laura used to show Jewels’ mother, Look At Me, and now she’s moving on with Jewels.  This was Jewels’ first competitive season at HITS, so even more impressive.  Lauras’ intrepid trainer, Jen Bell, has been involved with both Laura and Jewels’ training since the very beginning.  Now as a 7 year old, Jewels early promise is coming to fruition.

Today is also the Finals of the SKINS Polo Tournament at Eldorado Polo Club.  12-goals, it will be exciting as each chukkar has a cash prize of $4,000 and is cumulative, just as with Holes in Golf.  Game starts at 2 pm.  Empire is also featuring a terrific 2 pm Final match of their 8-goal circuit.  A GREAT day to be had at our Desert Polo Venues…and the last day for another year..come on out!

The Quarry—Perfect for the Equestrian & Golf Family

The Quarry golf courseIf you’re looking for one of the best private golf communities in the Palm Springs Valley, The Quarry at La Quinta is perfect—plus, it has something for everyone in the family. For the equestrian wife who competes in horse shows, the renowned Horses in the Sun (HITS) Desert Circuit takes place in nearby Thermal at the state-of-the-art HITS Desert Horse Park. The husband with a passion for golf will always be able to get his fill at the championship 18-hole course or the 10-hole short course at the Quarry, both designed by the legendary Tom Fazio. If you’re looking for homes for sale in La Quinta, this gorgeous, exclusive community is a must-see.

Tucked into the foothills between the Coral and Santa Rosa Mountains, the beauty of this location is inspiring and private—an enclave where undulating fairways and incredible landscape provide a backdrop for the sheer natural beauty of the desert. The stunning homes are architecturally diverse and each homesite is positioned to showcase and enjoy the environment.

The Quarry was originally founded by two avid golfers seeking less crowded courses, who purchased 105 acres in La Quinta. They were then joined by 13 founding associates, who together purchased the adjacent 255 acres, which comprise The Quarry today. If you’re looking for homes for sale in beautiful La Quinta, you’ll want to see what’s available among the 100+ homes and sites that range from move-in ready properties, The Villas that offer three floor plans up to 4,600 square feet, or residences that may be custom designed for your family’s needs.

While The Quarry offers premier levels of privacy and safety with round-the-clock security, residents can easily access all that La Quinta has to offer, from the chic boutiques and fine dining options of Old Town La Quinta to picturesque hiking and biking trails in the vicinity. Horse lovers and equestrians can quickly get to Thermal for the 6-week HITS Desert Circuit, or nearby Indio to enjoy polo at one of the beautiful clubs, the Eldorado Polo Club or the Empire Polo Club.

The luxury provided by this member-owned golf club is perfectly exemplified by the stunning courses, set against the pristine desert landscape with distinctly elevated areas, waterfalls, streams and lush native plants and trees. As a result, The Quarry’s championship course is ranked in the top 50 among Golf Digest’s 100 top courses and has attracted a wide range of golf legends, from Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson to Arnold Palmer and many others. The elegant 21,000 square foot Mediterranean style clubhouse features a spacious veranda and serves breakfast, lunch and sometimes dinner.
