3 Ways to Stave Off Summer Boredom

If you’ve run out of things to do this summer, there are still plenty of ways to keep boredom at bay—at least, if you live in the desert cities. If you’re in town to check out Indio real estate or an international investor looking at buying luxury international real estate in Palm Springs, you have an array of activities at your fingertips that will keep you occupied and excited about your potential move to the desert cities. Below are three fun things to do in your spare time this summer.

Take a Tour. There are so many cool tours to take—even if you’re already a resident, it’s always fun to explore what Palm Springs has to offer. If you’ve been considering buying Indio real estate, you’ll be excited to discover that Indio is the “Date Capitol” of the world. Not as in going out to find a significant other, but as in the delicious, nutrient-rich fruit. There is also a remarkable concentration of Mid-Century Modern Architecture that is definitely worth seeing, as well as tourist attractions including Elvis’s Honeymoon Hideaway and the Marilyn Monroe Statue, among many other exciting sights.

Cool off in the mountains. The desert cities boast the world’s largest rotating tram—the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway. Ascend thousands of feet during a 10 minute journey that takes you past the sheer cliffs of Chino Canyon to the top of San Jacinto Mountain, where you’ll be immersed in a chilly new climate zone, even when temperatures spike in the valley. Take a hike or guided nature walk, or have lunch or dinner at the Pines Café or Peaks Restaurant, which both offer breathtaking views.

Hit the Boulevard. El Paseo Boulevard is known as the “Rodeo Drive of the Desert.” In addition to finding some serious shopping opportunities among the chic designer boutiques, you can stroll along the beautifully manicured street, relax at the sidewalk cafes and people watch for hours on end.

On Thursday, August 8 from 6 to 8 pm, the Summer Film Series continues at the Palm Springs Art Museum with a screening of Getting Home. The film, which screens at the lovely Annenberg Theater as part of this series, is a soulful comedy about a middle–aged construction worker named Zhao, on a mission to fulfill his dying co–worker’s last wish to be buried in China’s Three Gorges region.

On Saturday, August 10 at 7 pm, there will be a concert featuring live music and astronomy by Clive Wright Live Ambient at Van Tassels’ historic and oh-so-mysterious Integratron, located in Landers, California. The event is part of a fundraiser for the Mojave Desert Land Trust.

Finding kid-friendly homes

If you have a growing family, there are many additional concerns to keep in minding when buying real estate. Whether you are interested in Indio homes for sale or another part of Palm Springs, there’s more to consider than square footage and how many bedrooms a house has. If you’re looking for your dream property in Rancho Mirage, Indian Wells or another part of California, here are a few things to keep in mind.

  1. The future. Take stock of your future plans. Are you going to have more children? Do you have a boy and a girl? Do you want there to be a guest bathroom that is separate from the children’s bathroom? Does your family have pets? What size backyard are you looking for? And a common question that crosses the minds of those looking at Indio homes for sale: do you want a pool? Be thorough in assessing your needs and be realistic about what is available within the constraints of your budget.
  2. The school system. How close is the home you’re looking at to schools? Does the public school system meet your children’s needs or will you need to find a private school? What is the student-teacher ratio at the schools you are interested in and how do the students’ test scores rank?
  3. The neighborhood.  Just like adults need work/life balance, children need a balance of school and play. How close are the parks and playgrounds? What type of extracurricular activities do your children want to pursue? You may want to assess the proximity of dance classes or a gymnastics school, as well as nearby sports programs, football fields, basketball courts and baseball diamonds. Another thing to consider is access to swimming pools, hiking trails, horse stables for those interested in horseback riding and places for safe bicycling.

If you do some research, you’re sure to find the perfect home for your entire family. If you’re ready to get the process started, click here to see listings of property in Rancho Mirage, Indian Wells and other areas of the Coachella Valley.

If you own property in Indio, chances are you’ll answer “yes.” Palm Springs and The Coachella Valley are considered the “Date Capital of the World.” Founded in the 1920s, Shields Date Garden is a family-owned business that grows its own dates free of any chemical fertilizers or pesticides. You’ll find every date imaginable in the store, where you can sample and taste test. One trip to the café in the back, where you can order breakfast or lunch, will make you understand why this destination is not only a favorite for tourists, but for locals and owners of property in Indio as well. Make sure to try one of Shields’ famous date shakes.

The Living Desert. This one-of-a-kind zoo and botanical garden is home to more than 450 wild animals and desert inhabitants. Spanning 1,200 protected acres, this spectacular sight represents the desert environments of both North America and Africa, and features live animal shows and a model train exhibit. 3 improvements to help you sell your home

Window treatments make a huge difference

If you’re getting in the mindset to sell your property in Palm Springs, than its most likely the perfect time to make some minor improvements that can translate to some major interest and a bigger price tag. You don’t have to thing big either. Here are a few recommendations for improvements that prove popular with many sellers, whether they’re listing a beach condo, a downtown loft or a gorgeous piece of Indio real estate.

Make sure the entry is welcoming. The door is going to make the first impression as potential buyers enter your home. Your goal is to make the exterior as welcoming as the interior. With that in mind, step outside and assess the welcome factor for yourself. Make sure everything is sparkling clean and that all glass is shiny and pristine. Polish or replace any dodgy hardware, and if the paint is peeling or decrepit, re-paint it! Add a nice welcome mat and some planters to make a strong first impression.

Make over the closets. This is an easy repair that you can do yourself by simply purchasing closet systems. This will also help you with planning your move—hopefully, to another beautiful property in Palm Springs. When a closet is filled to the brim and clothes are stuffed inside, it makes everything look smaller. Start the decluttering process now and use these systems to make the most of the space. It will make the entire closet seem larger and any clothes horses who may be interested in your house will take a strong liking to what appears to be an easy to organize, spacious closet.

Update window treatments. If the windows are in shabby shape, they will do nothing to help you sell your house. Evaluate all of your curtains, shades and blinds to make sure everything is fresh and new.  Check for bent blinds, any torn fabric and dirt. If necessary, replace anything that is outdated—window treatments are such an easy fix, and the last thing you want to stand in the way of the sale of your beautiful Indio real estate.
