Selling a home is a monumental step in your life, especially when you’ve lived in a house for years. The entire process can be very emotional for some, so it’s important to start preparing as soon as you make the decision to sell. Once you’re ready to think about staging your property, it’s essential to detach and depersonalize. Even the most beautiful Palm Springs homes for sale should have a neutral feel so that potential buyers can walk in and imagine their own family living there.
Whether you’re listing Palm Desert real estate, a beach condo or a downtown loft, everyone wants their property to command top dollar and to get an offer as soon as possible. Yet homeowners still struggle with detaching from their residences, especially when it’s a family home filled with years of memories. It’s very important for sellers to start thinking of the property as a commodity as soon as they decide to list it. Sellers need to think objectively and focus on the ultimate goal.
A great way to start the process and get your Palm Desert real estate ready is to pack up all family photos, albums, and knick knacks and store them off the property. The last thing you want is a lot of boxes in the garage, so it’s worth it to get a storage facility offsite. Strip the walls and closets of as many items as possible. Evaluate your toiletries and other products that you keep in drawers and closets and either throw out or store the ones you don’t need. This will make everything appear more spacious and make it easier for buyers to imagine their own belongings there.
This is also a great time to start neutralizing the décor. Everyone has their own unique taste, so consider your target market and what may or may not appeal to them. Transform the color scheme into a neutral palette if possible and eliminate items that showcase your personal style.

When it comes to pricing and staging luxury properties to appeal to international real estate buyers, it helps to have a well-designed home that looks modern and sophisticated. For some potential buyers, especially those from Europe, a minimalist design works well, as it leaves more to the imagination and looks less personalized. However, if you’re not planning to sell your home for a year or so but it needs a design update, it helps to take some of the current trends into consideration.
Whether you plan to sell real estate in Palm Desert or a home in Beverly Hills, there are a few trends that you can incorporate to make it easier to appeal to a wide-ranging market in the near future, while allowing you to truly enjoy the design of your home for as long as you’re living there.
A lighter look. Make sure rooms don’t look cluttered by scaling back on certain pieces and choosing tailored furniture instead of anything bulky. Swap large bookcases out for mounted shelves and think “less is more” in terms of décor that has no utility. Boosting illumination is also an excellent way to update and brighten your home, especially when dealing with a smaller space. Choose great lighting and make space to maximize natural light.
Double-Duty Furnishings. Another great way to maximize the space of your real estate in Palm Desert is by opting for furniture that does double duty. A popular trend is using ottomans for seating and storage, sleeper sofas and coffee tables that rise for dining purposes.
Outdoor Spaces. Moving functional spaces outdoors is a popular trend, especially among the desert cities, where good weather can be enjoyed all year long—and this will definitely appeal to those international real estate buyers who live in colder climates. You can create an outdoor kitchen with a simple cook’s station and grill, or a screened off patio to serve as a family or recreation room.

The Palm Canyon Trail
One of the best parts of living in Palm Springs is the unlimited access to the great outdoors and amazing year round weather. Many locals and owners of Palm Desert real estate take advantage of this by enjoying some of the gorgeous hikes that are so easy to reach from all of the desert cities. Here are a couple of our favorites:
Palm Canyon Trail. This picturesque hike can last anywhere from a half mile to 15 miles—it’s up to you to decide how far you want to hike. Walk deep into the canyon and enjoy the abundant desert vegetation and groves of Palm trees, where you can catch glimpses of mesmerizing desert wildlife—it’s the ideal way to relax after work or a day of viewing La Quinta homes for sale. You can climb above the oasis if you’re a serious hiker, or simply enjoy the many trails that offer stunning views of the oasis, waterfalls, the gorgeous San Jacinto mountain range and the equally beautiful Santa Rosa mountains in the distance.
The Araby Trail. This lovely trail provides excellent views of the entire Coachella Valley. What’s exciting to many visitors or those in town to look at La Quinta homes for sale is that the trail leads you right past Bob Hope’s house. Once your pass it, if you’re still feeling ambitious you can continue along to access other trails, including the Henderson, Berns and Garstin Trails.
Maynard Mine Trail. Approximately six miles long, this trail leads to the remains of an old tungsten mine that was worked by Jim Maynard during World War II. It’s a rugged, uphill trail that climbs the mountain continuously, and is best suited to hikers with a little more experience. At one point you will gain approximately 2200 feet in elevation, making for incredible views of the canyons and entire Coachella Valley.

Whether you’ve got homes for sale in Palm Desert, real estate in Rancho Mirage or properties in another part of the country, curb appeal is essential to selling a home. While it may seem like a daunting task to those with busy schedules or a lack of know-how, there are many things you can do to boost the appearance of your property that don’t take a huge amount of time or effort. Here are the three easy ways that a few savvy real estate professionals recently shared with us.
- Upgrade the front door. This little maneuver is one of the easiest ways to instantly enhance the appearance of your entire property. The entry to your home is the focal point of its curb appeal. While the cost of new doors typically start at around $2500, you can just as easily make a statement with a coat of paint. If you do go the route of installing a new door, this will greatly increase your resale value. Before any potential buyers come to take a look, always make sure to clean off any sports around the knob and polish the door fixtures.
- Makeover your mailbox. A new mailbox is another extremely easy way to improve the appearance of the home and add a little personality. Find a mailbox that reflects the décor of your home and its external trimmings. Some owners will paint their mailboxes to match the color of the house, while others may reflect the environment. For example, an owner of real estate in Rancho Mirage that we know recently incorporated his desert landscape into the mailbox décor by adding simple yet elegant desert flora and fauna to a small garden surround it.
- Improve the landscape. Quality landscaping is a great way to significantly enhance your home’s style. You don’t have to get crazy with it—as long as it’s interesting to the eye, well-thought out and ties in with the outside of the home, you’ll achieve your goal.

R. Hero by Karen & Tony Barone
There are many reasons why Palm Desert real estate is in such demand—and one of them is the city’s dedication to culture and the arts. This vibrant desert city has become one of the Coachella Valley’s premier hubs in everything from education and shopping to art shows. Every year, there is a wide range of special events and activities organized by some of the very active local organizations, such as Hidden Harvest, the Historical Society of Palm Desert, the Palm Springs Art Museum, Mojave Desert Land Trust and Walter N. Marks Center for the Arts at College of the Desert, among many others.
An excellent example of the city’s commitment is the Art in Public Places program, the city’s collection that features more than 150 pieces of artwork, including everything from grandiose sculptures to works that are integrated into the landscape of the city. Residents, tourists and foreign visitors looking at luxury international real estate properties are always in awe of the ubiquitous art.
There are city tours that will lead you through the locations of some of these awesome pieces—a great way to get a feeling for the community and desert cultural life is to take one of these tours during your search for Palm Desert real estate. Visit three “Komodo Dragons” sculptures created from copper coated galvanized steel or “Archangel,” a mobile halo homage to solar and wind-powered energy alternatives. Take the kids or grandkids to see “R Hero,” a six foot plus, purple aluminum Dalmatian puppy dog sculpture that was built to honor firefighters. Music aficionados will love “Thought of a Treble Clef,” an abstract sculpture that appears to be a treble clef when viewed from the front, but evolved into a flowing and changing piece as you walk around it.

When you’re staging or preparing Palm Springs homes for sale, or real estate in any area for that matter, it’s important to make sure your focal points look extra amazing. Staging is an absolute art, and one of the most important rooms to master is the kitchen. It’s where families gather, partygoers tend to socialize and homeowners in general spend a lot of their time.
Whether you’re preparing to show your Palm Desert real estate in the near future or just now considering making a move, you should start planning some sort of makeover for your kitchen. It’s an area that should absolutely sparkle. While it can be very pricy to remodel this oh-so-important room, there are things you can do to revamp it without spending an absolute fortune. After all, you’re not going to be the one who gets to enjoy cooking in it every day.
- Make it sparkle and shine. Hire a cleaning crew to do a deep cleaning of the kitchen so that you can easily maintain their work on a weekly basis. Have the floors and baseboards scrubbed squeaky clean and the corners vacuumed. If you have pets, you may consider making this room off-limits. Have all the cabinets wiped down and make sure both the inside and outside of the refrigerator is perfect.
- Polish the goods. On a weekly basis, polish any chrome fixtures and hardware. If the hardware is worn down or looks a little to retro, replace it. This is typically an easy, inexpensive fix that can make Palm Springs homes for sale look newer and more modern.
- De-personalize. Eliminate refrigerator magnets and any Post-it notes.
- Bring in some life. While you don’t want to clutter up the room, adding a plant or two and a cookbook on the shelf makes the room seem warmer and more inviting.
- Do the dishes. Never leave dishes in the dishwasher. Realtors report that, for some reason, potential buyers always open the dishwasher and look inside during showings and open houses. While you’re trying to sell your property, make it a habit to wash dishes as soon as you use them.
